James | I must have cleaned this DLL out of the system, but now when I go to uninstall certain games like Splinter Cell, it says it is missing this DLL. I've gone to the install directories but the files for uninstalling either don't work or aren't there. I tried a different program for uninstalling the games and even that won't let me uninstall... Really confusing on whethere this DLL was needed, or just malacious. |
name | This file (ctor.dll) is distributed with the dot net installer and windows installation and written by Installshield software. By itself it's not bad and is in fact as James noted a needed component for the "add/remove programs" control panel application that is a core component of win xp. if you delete this file anything that used the Windows Installer to put a program on your computer (many use their own install exe's instead) will not be removable by normal means. I suspect the hotbar calls the windows installer to place the program onto your computer and register it within the WinXp regisstry. You should verify that it has not been tampered with by checking against a know authentic copy, but DON'T delete or move the file. This means you should also put it into the "exceptions list" of any spyware programs you might have if they are falsely claiming it to be spyware. the following path is where it should be located: C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\PROFES~1\RunTime\09\01\Intel32\Ctor.dll
If you find it elsewhere it might indicate a problem unless you changed the path to the whole installer directory. |
Parfait | Similar to James, I must have removed ctor.dll, but now when I go to remove other legitimate software, I get an error that says ctor.dll isn't available. Now what? |
Ryan | I have the same problem with the above user. I can't uninstall Chaos Theory because the "ctor.dll" is missing, and I don't know what to do with that. |
Julius | As long as you find the dll in the Common Files you should not delete it. In the Windows\System directory it probably is a spyware. |
Dave22 | I had the same problem, uninstalling the Chaos Theory, but in this moment i succeed (maybe). Open regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ubisoft , and rename the directory (Splinter Cell - Chaos Theory; Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory). Next time you tries to install the game, it will offer to uninstall the game. |
nando | dave, in window xp there is no such key in the registry |
